Quixote Transport Technologies, Inc. Receives Highway Advisory Radio Transmitter Certification in Canada

04-01-2007

(DURHAM, NC April 2007) – Quixote Transportation Technologies, Inc. (QTT) announces the receipt of Highway Advisory Radio certification in Canada, effective March 2007.

Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) is a low power radio station used to provide the traveling public with the most current information related to local road conditions, closures, or delays. Motorists receive travel advisory information by tuning their car radios to the proper predefined frequency. Prior to this award, certification of HAR transmitters did not exist in Canada. Quixote Transportation Technologies worked with Nemko, a premier product certification and compliance test house, to facilitate and test its HAR equipment for approval by Industry Canada. Industry Canada is the government entity that licenses radio equipment, similar to the FCC in the United States.

All transmitters have to be certified by the FCC in the United States, and HARs, also known as Travelers Information Stations are certified under Section 90.242 of the FCC regulations. The equivalent standard in Canada is BETS5, and the QTT HAR system meets all the Canadian requirements. The specifications are defined slightly different for Canadian HAR systems than in the U.S., but little modification was needed for QTT’s equipment.

Information broadcast on a HAR can include: winter road conditions, warnings to motorists of possible hazards, road delays or detours, road closures or delays due to an emergency situation, vehicle accidents, advance notice of future disruptions due to construction and/or maintenance activities, or general safety messages (Buckle Up, Drive Safely, etc.). Properly operating HARs have a positive impact on safety by increasing driver awareness and reducing frustration.

“The Canadian HAR certification opens the door for QTT HAR systems to increase the safety of Canadian roadways,” explains Mike Corbett, Sales Manager for QTT. “QTT has created an opportunity for HAR systems that will apply to anyone wishing to offer this service in Canada. We are very excited for the opportunities this will provide our customers. The QTT HAR system offers yet another resource for Canadian agencies to create safer driving environments.”
